ARTICLE: HOW TO BECOME MORE PATIENT WITH YOUR RESULTS
Having patience when it comes to seeing results is one of the most difficult aspects of training or eating well. We all want results and we want them now, which is perfectly understandable, but it does lead to dissatisfaction, unrealistic expectations and is one of the biggest reasons we give up. We feel if we are not seeing the results we want straight away then what is the point? I see it every day with clients and I know post baby I will be feeling exactly the same way! I will no doubt want to get back to my pre pregnancy fitness and body as quickly as possible, but I do know it wont be that simple. So here are a few pieces of advice on how to stay patient, even when it is the last thing on our minds!
The best piece of advice I can give anyone is to set realistic expectations. This does not mean that you cannot go after the results you really want, but it does mean you have to set a fair timescale to achieve them. The fitness industry is famous for promising huge results overnight which does not help anyone manage their expectations! So despite reading all the hype set a realistic timeframe for reaching your goals, this will put you in the right frame of mind from day one.
The next step is to focus on the process. Goals are important, but if we get too fixated on just the numbers we can get frustrated and impatient if we do not get the result we want every single week. However, if we can focus on the process and know that we are doing everything to the best of our abilities then the results will come, maybe not after one week but certainly over the coming weeks. The process allows us to find the patience that we need to wait this amount of time. Despite always having ambitious goals for myself, I used to only measure my progress every few weeks. Instead, I focused on following my training programme and my food plans week in and week out knowing that this would deliver the results I wanted after a predefined period of time.
Finally, stop comparing your results to anyone else. One of the most common comments that clients make is that their friend lost a certain amount of weight in less time than them. They may well have but what does it matter if someone loses 3 pounds one week and you lose 2 pounds. There can be a thousand different reasons for this and what really matters is what happens over a long period of time. Where will you both be 3, 6 or 12 months from now? Those are the results that matter, not from one week to the next! So do yourself a favour and stop looking around at others. Focus on your own goals, your own process and in making sure that you are working as hard you possibly can. Nothing else matters!
I know having patience is a tough sell in the health and fitness industry, but trust me, if you can learn to be more patient your long term results will be much better!
