ARTICLE: What are you working towards?

We are just coming to the end of week 2 of the 12 week challenge and so I thought it was good time to talk about what you really want to achieve by the end of the 12 weeks. It is important to really think about this and do not be vague in your mind. If it is weight, have a number in mind, if it is fitness related, set a specific target based on the exercises you are currently doing, if it is a look, visualise it! Be as specific as you can as this is the only factor that will keep you motivated long term.

After years of personal training I began to realise that the only people that succeed are those that have a specific goal in mind and have a drive and ambition to reach it. Those that have half hearted goals where they would maybe like to lose weight or tone up and maybe get a bit fitter, get half hearted results because they are not driven by a specific target.

Even on a personal level, I set very specific targets. Mine are almost exclusively linked to strength and fitness and on this blog I have regularly discussed my desire to go from 1 to 5 pull ups in a row, to master the single arm press up and many other specific goals. I do it to keep me motivated, to help me stay focused and to give my training a purpose. My goals are sometimes linked to aesthetics too. Naturally before a summer holiday I might up the ab work a bit to make sure they are looking good! The goals change and my training changes to match, but the purpose of setting them remains the same. It makes me want to keep going and I can channel my efforts into making it happen.

A specific goal helps you train appropriately and allows you to work towards it step by step. If your priority is weight loss then nutrition has to be the key factor. If you have a fitness goal or a certain look then you desire then you will need to train appropriately. By having this purpose you can make your dream a reality.

You might have started the first 2 weeks perfectly or you might have had a patchy start, it does not matter either way. What matters is that at the end of 12 weeks you feel like you have either reached your target or have taken a big step towards it! To do that though you have to be sure about what you are working towards!
