ARTICLE: Staying focused on the end goal
Last week I posted an update on the 12 week 4321 challenge and on a personal level reflected on a very busy and pretty stressful week. Both of these events made me realise the importance of staying focused on the end goal and how having something tangible to work towards can have a direct impact on our behaviour day to day and that without it we will always find distractions that hold us back from what we are trying to achieve.
I obviously cannot speak on behalf of those taking part in the 12 week challenge, although I would assume that there are some days when they have not felt like training, but still done it anyway simply to stay on track and hit that ‘Like’ button. Having a specific goal of trying to get as many points as possible and a deadline is likely to play a factor in their success as well as some of their personal targets, which hopefully we can learn more about at the end of the process. Whilst their motivation is unknown, I can discuss mine and how having a goal and a deadline is helping me stay on track even on the days when my energy and motivation is low.
I would say I am generally motivated and positive with regards to my work and of course health and fitness, but like everybody, there are some days when I do not want to do everything I have set out to do. I might be tired, busy, stressed or even just have something more fun that I want to do! In these moments it is all about discipline. It is about having the discipline to stick to what I have set out to do no matter how I feel or what gets in the way. Discipline is often seen as a skill that some have and others don’t, but actually it comes down to what we value, what motivates us and what we want to achieve.
Almost everyone has discipline in some areas of their life but not in others because of these factors and when it comes to health and fitness we have to tap into what we value from our health and wellbeing and what is going to motivate us to keep going. Normally this comes from having a tangible goal. For myself, over the last few weeks I have set a strong goal of updating the Signature Collection and working on a new video series. I have been planning on doing this for a long time, but always filled my time with other jobs. It wasn’t until I set a deadline that I focused and made time for it. It has been difficult to fit into my schedule and tiring due to the physical demands of training extra every week. However, even on the days when I am really not feeling up to it I have still managed to hit my targets because I can visualise my end goal and my desire to reach that trumps my desire skip a session.
Reaching our goals is never easy, but it does become easier if we know what we are working towards and why. So if you are struggling with your training at the moment tap into what you really want, be as specific as possible, set a deadline and focus on reaching it every single day.
Hope you have a great week!
