The first blog of 2020 and I am happy to say I am feeling ready to go and take on the New Year. I was feeling very tired at the end of 2019, it had been a long tough year with just 1 week off before the festive season and both Giulio and I were feeling it . Not to mention we had a crazy December trying to get so many new features for our programme launched and ready for January 2020. Monday the 23rd December could not come quick enough.
I am really pleased to say that we both managed to take a good 10 days off and did nothing but eat, sleep and see friends and family. We had a fantastic time and both feel ready for the New Year. It was important to have that rest as work does not seem to be slowing down (which is great) and we also have to some how fit a new baby into the mix. I am not sure how that is going to work out for the moment, but I am sure we will find a way!
I know that having New Years resolutions can be a bit of a cliché these days and many people can set the bar too high when planning changes but I do still think that the beginning of the year is a great time for fresh starts and to give you focus and clarity. Of course, it is equally important that you carry these intentions beyond the month of January, but if you can start the year in the right way I think it helps.
I like to start the year by reflecting on the previous year and deciding what I would do differently or what I would like to build on going forward. I genuinely cannot think of a better time for this type of reflection. It is not the only time I stop and take stock of my goals, but it is one of the most poignant. 2019 was a big year for Giulio and I as we made many changes in our career and it took us quite a while to find our feet with the new challenges we were taking on. Going into 2020 we need to build on this and carry the momentum we have built up in order to get the success that we are looking for and, most importantly, that we are working towards.
2019 was also a great year for our wee family as we did find a good balance between work and family time and have mostly managed to juggle childcare between us. This was a real driving force behind us making all the changes that we did as we both wanted to spend as much time as possible with Paolo whilst he was so young. We are hoping to do the same for this second baby as well, which will mean long days again working when the babies go down at night (fingers crossed that they both do go down) but that is the trade off that we make for that time with them during the day. That is life as a working parent for everyone though, constantly trying to find a balance that works for you and your family. There is no right answer, it is just a constant juggle.
One of the only things I hope to change in 2020 is to enjoy a little more time off. It was a strain on both of us having such little time off particularly as Giulio works a lot of weekends so finding a little more down time, even throughout the week, would help us not only have a bit more fun but also allow to feel more energised and focused for our working week. Last year there were some times where we both felt as though we were running on empty.
I am optimistic about having a great year though and building on the successes that we had in 2019. The good news is we are rested, relaxed and ready to go for it!
